Cube 3D printer discussion / Re: First layer blob
« on: March 25, 2015, 06:43:00 pm »
Doesn't 235 C still seem way hot for PLA?! And 250 for the first layer! :o I am looking at recommended temps from the two manufacturers and one is 185 C and the other is 190-220 C. Is the 3DS PLA really that different or does the Cube read hot? I mean that's quite a difference.

I found something strange. I decoded a .cube file with CodeX, changed only the extrusion temps to 190 then 200, recoded, and then the blob problem is gone! It seems really odd that the Cubify software doesn't work properly with their own product, but that seems to be the case?

I'm kind of sad that I have to add this extra step of decoding/recoding files to make this thing work properly (and at the right temp) but I guess that's a "feature" of working with 3DS printers.  ;) It wouldn't be bad except that CodeX program is Windows-only and I have a Mac.

I've found no need for 1.6 mm filament or an expensive add-on. ::) Just use the instructions in this very thread. Easy and free!

Cube 3D printer discussion / Anyone tried Slic3r?

I've read a lot about Kisslicer but wondering if anyone has tried Slic3r? It looks much nicer than Kisslicer and has some cool tricks like real-time layer preview.

I'm going to try both Kisslicer with Bobo's settings and Slic3r and see if I can make it work / how they compare.  :)

Here's a .cube file I printed.

I figure you are going to decode this with CodeX? I did that just now (first time I've done this) and nothing is standing out to me that would make it pause at the end of the first layer for 4 seconds.

Also, does the 2nd gen Cube really heat the extruder nozzle at 250 C for PLA? That seems WAY hotter than I would have expected...

Ok good to know.

I'm thinking about this but keep coming back to how even after all that effort and expense I'd still be missing a heated print plate. Might eventually just build a new printer instead.  ??? We shall see...

I have 2.08 firmware. I've used Cubify software on both Mac (mostly) and PC to create the .cube files.

I've printed probably 15 different files by now, from basic shapes to the highly complex and they all do exactly this same thing. I think I can rule out an error in the model.

I'm not sure I've ever used a stock 3DS .cube file. I will try this, though I don't think it will make any difference as no one else seems to have this issue even when downloading STLs from other sources and converting them to .cube format.  :-\

Well at least I know now that it's not supposed to do this, so that's somewhat helpful in itself. It also makes me more determined to fix it! It's not the worst problem as usually the bottom layer isn't seen anyway and and excess can be trimmed, but of course it would be better without this blob.

Hey guys, could you please help me out.  I have a cube 2nd gen trying to use bulk hack with makerbot pla 1.75mm. The problem is that half way through printing, the filament starts to get stripped by the gear. If i loosen the gear, then the black and white stripped gear stops spinning because it cant grip the filament. I know its trial and error but can someone pls tell me how to set the correct tension of it using a spanner (e.g. place the filament first and then put the bolt on) Pls help guys. It would be much appreciate. Cheers !

The steps I did:
1. Disassembled the print head.
2. Very slightly filed down the triangular notch that the pulley rests against to allow it to move very slightly further from the gear.
3. Re-assembled the print head with a fresh piece of matterhackers PLA inserted between the gear and pulley when tightening the 7mm nut.

I'm not sure #2 was actually necessary. #3 made a big difference as on my first attempt I tightened the nut without a piece of PLA in place and there results weren't good. Since doing those things, I've ran probably 40 hours of printing on it using matterhackers PLA in 3 different colors with zero feed problems!

The only problem I have now is sometimes the object will come unstuck from the print plate before it's finished printing, but I'm not sure what can be done to ever make that 100%. Applying CubeStick seems more of an art than a science.

Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk6-Y2w6PzM

Ignore the bits that didn't stick to the plate--this was just a test so I wasn't concerned about prepping it well.

You can clearly see how it pauses for 3-4 seconds when it's done with the first layer BUT THE FILAMENT KEEPS FEEDING even though it's stopped!

Like I said, every single print does this...

@vadder Will do, possibly tonight if I have time. I will post a video of it creating the blob.

I don't think it's clear to everyone yet that it is not related to starting a print like the fine string that comes out during heatup--It is well into a print when this blob is formed. The video should make this very clear.

Dan,
I'm curious if you are still using your modified 2nd gen Cube? Do you have any time to post your latest thoughts and recommended parts/software for those that might want to attempt this same thing?

I will try recalibrating, but I don't think that's related.

No one else's 2nd gen Cube has this issue?  ???

The fine preheating string is not what I'm referring to in this case. I'm referring to the extruder coming to a complete stop after the first layer is 100% finished for about 3-5 seconds, and making a blob of PLA in that spot. After that it continues normally until it's finished and never stops again.

Happens on every single one of my prints.

Does everyone's second gen cube make a big blob after completing the first layer? Mine seems to do this no matter what file I load.

Can anything be done? Is it the fault of the Cube firmware or the Cube slicer?

Well I think I fixed my own problem. I took apart the print head again and this time when I reassembled the pulley and carrier I made sure a piece of filament (matterhackers) was inserted before tightening the nut.

I've printed two small objects now with not a single slip-click that I noticed! Much better.

Great hack, Dan. I probably wouldn't even use this printer (which was given to me, so can't really complain much!) without access to the 5x cheaper filament. Thanks for creating this website and posting that helpful info.

I'm currently using Matterhacker's silver PLA and while it is working, it does slip-skip sometimes. The pulley and gear always move perfectly together, even during the slip-click, so I assume that means it is right on the edge of it's ability to pull it through and struggling. Obviously it's no fun when a layer is only partially laid down in the middle of the print!

I have taking the head apart and filed it a little bit so the pulley could move slightly further from the gear, but apparently not enough. I'm a bit nervous about overdoing the filing and causing it to slip so I only took off a small amount. I think I'm going to do a bit more filing since i can see the gear is still gripping the filament quite well by the marks it's leaving, and if that doesn't work, try adjusting the pot.

Wondering if anyone has tried to adjust the pot for their extruder on their 2nd gen Cube yet and if so, how it worked out?
