Cube 3D printer discussion / Re: First layer blob

THat is totally screwed.  I shouldnt happen and Im fairly sure it has nothing to do with calibration.  IMO it has to do with one of two things. First, is the firmware up to date?  Second are you sure you dont have an error in the STL file you are printing which causes the cube to try to print an extremely small, highly detailed section of your STL?  I know you mentioned this happens with every print, but have you tried using one of the sample cube .cube files to be sure?

Yes, leave it in place.  With the thickness of mine, it doesnt interfere at all.

Ashley, how'd you go with this issue?  Was it a case of clogged hotend?

I've never used the print time or remaining filament anyway.  On the cube they're as good as useless, certainly if using bulk filament.  Saying that, marlin firmware doesn't calculate remaining time or filament estimates very well either.  I guess there are a lot of variables related to print time and filament used that 3d printer firmware in general doesn't use.

Have you had a chance to play with kisslicer?  Any further thoughts?

Abs prints at a higher temperature than pla.  Worthwhile noting if you're not using standard cube software / cube files.

Does kisslicer have an option for extrusion multiplier?  Could it be the walls are thinner on the kisslicer models?

Bobobob..  I notice you're printing on blue tape.  How do you find it?  Does it work as well as glue?

It might be worthwhile posting a file the cube3 software spits out so we can have a look.  If you watch the folder you're saving to as the software saves, does it create (and automatically delete) it's working files?

Hmm never used cura, but will give it a go on my new "Elevator" - a 2m tall, twin struder delta giant.  Something tells me im going to need to figure out how to make my own filament if im to print life size models of my children.  ;D

My 2 cents :Was discussing the matter of filament variation with a very experienced friend of mine the other day.  Again, we both agreed - if your printer isnt working with crap filament - something is terribly wrong, and chances are it's not the filament.  Both of us regularly use the cheapest crap available and the worst result I get from crap filament is slight blobbing from over extrusion or perhaps thinner walls from undersized filament.  We've both experienced blockages and extrusion failures, but they're always because of something else - generally filament heating up inside the neck of the hotend from under cooling and poor entry alignment, including the MK7.

Yeah extruder stepper is tiny on the Cube 2.  Very easy to retro fit a larger one.  May have to remove that nice cover from your hotend to fit it though.   One thing I that got mentioned by a friend of mine was the potential for filament temperature to be reduced with printing speed.  May be worth trying to increase the temperature of hotend as print speed increases.  Working on a high speed delta printer right now. Trouble is bottom layer needs low speed, which will overheat the PLA making it crackle and pop.  Anyone know of a slicer which can slice at varying temperatures?
Im only aware of a manual way of doing this by splitting 2 of the same files, sliced with different temperature settings.

Great tips there. - THanks for sharing.  For me I just hacked open the area which used to hold the digital display and strapped a fan going right over the electronics.  I also drilled a few more holes in the case to allow for access to the trim pots for adjusting stepper power.  All steppers have a salvaged fan from the cube cable tied to them.  Just a large one around the girth of each motor as an anchor, then some small ones connecting the fan to the girth anchor ties.  All steppers feel luke warm when running.  Without them, they got too hot, even running at low amps.  Again im running a 12v system.

So you didnt end up re-using the 24v power supply form the Cube?

Your prints are looking so sweet.  Congrats on a great build.

Second that.  Wifi is pointless on the cube, unless you plan on screwing with it on a daily basis.

Yes I meant the case, one time I had the crappy cube filament crack inside so I had to disassemble case. When I put all back including chip in place cube did not recognize chip, so I am concerned about paying $50 bucks for nothing.

Anyways, I would like to print some kind of box that will contain the swiches and chips that can be easily removed from the contacts. Here is a wiring diagram of what I was thinking? Is this possible and do I use DPDT or DPST switch? Thanks in advance.

The connectors will break off eventually anyway, so wiring something else is going to be necessary..DPDT or ST???  I have no idea.  Well beyond my level of understanding.  Do they not do the same thing?  I would think whatever you need may need 4 inputs though? Perhaps a 3 position switch returing to open circuit when released?

Sorry man.  I'm an electro hack.

Hello Dan,

Switching 24 volt to the extruder with a relay was not a good idea. A lot of noise from de relay.
So I followed your suggestion end discovered that the minitronics can also run with up to 24 volt.
Now I am running the electronics with 19 volt, and a separate 12 volt supply for the cooling fans.
The heating up of the extruder is now really fast. So a very good suggestion from you. Thanks again.

Frits

Did you keep those voltage regs on the existing fans in place?  I'd have thought they'd have worked with 19v input no probs????  Did you try it?
