Cube 3D printer discussion / Re: cubify cube cartridge hack :(
« on: August 19, 2015, 08:44:27 am »
Bulk filament wont damage your nozzle, it will damage however 3D Systems ability to extort ridiculous sums of cash from you every few weeks.

The firmware should be version 2.08 from memory - personally i've not tried with any other version.   Firmware can be updated via the Cubify software.

I guess it's fair to say this is what you can do with a Frankencube : Some parts for the prototype were printed with the Frankencube.

The Beast is a large format 4x Synchronous 3D printer made by myself (Dan) and Josh Mamo from Cultivate 3D here in Australia.    The unit is large enough to print a small child, and can print 4 of the same object at the same time, or be reconfigured to print with 3 colours at the same time.

Youtube here :

Sorry for the shameless promotion.   Hopefully someone here is interested.

Sorry I've been so quiet here - busy as you can see on other things.

Cube 3D printer discussion / Re: Ramps Upgrade to a gen 1 cube

Well my inexpensive upgrade of the cube just took a $200 Hit. I toasted my extruder... didn't realize the fan was not spinning.... Live and learn...

Trying to see if the extruder would get to temp on 12V without a fan is a BAD idea.

Eeeek! you killed a $2.50 thermal fuse.  Just bypass it (short the cables leading to and from). You'll find it wrapped around the hotend.  If the thermal fuse blows due to excessive heat, the hotend gets no power.  I did exactly the same thing.  Marlin firmware does have a failsafe against this anyway.

So sweet.  THanks for the tip.   Sounds like a great option for those not willing to remove and replace the electronics or tweak the cube files.

A belated welcome, sorry I havent been around much.  Too busy working on my "Elevator" (own designed delta).  You're comments reflect my own experience.  Mine didnt work out of the box, I ripped it apart, put it together again and got it working, but yeah the cube software is totally crap.  It really doesnt take more than a night to turn your cube into a really good printer.  If you havent already, get the parts and do it.  I'd recommend this to anyone with a cube.

Hi sss.

I use proterface with whats left my cube2 (Frankencube).  I've ripped the guts out of my Cube and replaced all the electronics with a Mega2560/Ramps 1.4.  I've also changed the hotend.  I use a Merlin hotend.

Nice work.  Exactly what I did.  Works a treat - although momentary switch would be better, so you dont forget to turn it off.

Sounds interesting, but I wouldnt bother unless a 12v laptop power supply is an issue.  I use this one for my Frankencube :

Let us know about the mod if you do decide to do it.

Does the cube 1 not have a heated printbed?  The Cube 2 doesnt.

Hi Jeff,

If the Cube 3 is the same as all the other Cubes, you need to "build" or export a .cube file from the cubify software.

I could be wrong, but certainly my cube wont read anything but .cube

I use slic3r.   Some neat features allowing you to really nail down presets specific to various sections of features.   Being able to mix and match presets of various sections of features makes fine tuning easy and removes alot of the pain that would typically occur when changing nozzle sizes for example. The preview feature rarely gets used on my setup as pronterface already does that for me.  I notice much of the pro features of kisslicer already exist free in slic3r.

Heated plate is easily possible with the marlin firmware and arduino. Just plug the heated plate in.  Firmware is already setup to use it.  If printing with pla only, I'm not sure you'll ever need it.

Personally can't test the .cube files anymore (thanks to frankencube)  but got my money on the files you are printing.  Please let us know what happens with a stock .cube file (one of the ones on the USB stick supplied with the unit).

Yes, still using it.  I use it for smaller parts now and have used it primarily to create the parts necessary for my "Elevator" (own design) 2 meter Delta Printer.  In terms of the hardware, nothing has changed since my original post.  Its reliable, lightning fast, uses whatever nozzle I screw into it and makes far less noise than the Cube.  Im here to help if you have any specific questions about the setup.
